Gianni Cardani was born in Ponte San Pietro (in the province of Bergamo) Italy in 1922 and worked at Legler, a famous Italian textile company, from 1945 to 1997. Since his retirement, Cardani has been in charge of the photographic archive and the recording of local history as wintnessed by pictures, at Ponte San Pietro Library. Cardani has shown his photos in many exhibitions in Italy, Switzerland and in Russia.
About his work in photos and his love for jazz, Cardani says: "I've been living all my life in a village in the province of Bergamo, near Milano. Photography has always been my hobby. At the end of the 1950's, I decided to make a real job of it, but this was only a secret dream of mine. The link between photography and jazz began many years before, when some friends who loved this kind of music organised an event with a jazz band of Bergamo in my village. The "Jazz Band Bergamo" was a revival group, the first in Bergamo, with amateur musicians who played Dixieland. I accepted their proposal to take some photos to record that event. It was the first time I had listened to jazz music and I must say that I was completely involved: music, clicks and emotions mixed together. That's how I started,"
Cardani continues, "I have seen many other concerts since then, and taking pictures has become a pleasant sequel. This magic period lasted fifteen years. Then I had to reduce this activity because of a new position in the local factory with frequent flights abroad. My presence at concerts became less frequent but, when possible, I preferred listening to music rather than taking pictures. A big thank you to everyone who looks at them and appreciates them. Thank you to jazz also."
Gianni Cardani's jazz photographs and archives were rescued by photographer Riccardo Schwamenthal. Both gentlemen have graciously shared them with CTSIMAGES.
