Although Stanley Dance was born in England, he followed his love of jazz to New York. He became one of the foremost writers of American jazz. In over sixty years he wrote five full length books on swing, Basie, Ellington and Hines, as well as thousands of articles for the top jazz magazines around the world and even Grammy award-winning liner notes. His close relationship with Duke Ellington led to his nomination to compile Duke's autobiography, "Music is my Mistress" as well as "Duke Ellington in Person" co-authored with Duke's son Mercer, who led the band after Duke's death until his own.
His second great musical passion was the music of Earl Hines. Over the long association with both jazz greats, Dance amassed a large photograph inventory of their careers - their orchestras, and their lives. As as a prolific writer and jazz historian, the Dance Collection encompasses the jazz world with images dating from the 1920's to the 1990's.
